South Haven Point
The Salt PathSouth Haven Point is the endpoint of the South West Coast Path opposite Minehead, the route’s starting point. In Ray and Moth’s journey, its marker post and the nearby steel compass-and-sails sculpture identify not only the end of the trail but also a place from which their interrupted walk could begin again. They reached it after a period away from the path and set off west, with roughly 250 miles still to complete.
Position on the Coast Path
The route is identified by its two endpoints in the guidebook title The South West Coast Path: From Minehead to South Haven Point. At South Haven Point, a marker post bearing the familiar white acorn records the distance as 630 miles from South Haven Point to Minehead. The steel sculpture of a compass and sails also marks the end of the Coast Path, making the location legible as both a geographical terminus and a point of orientation.
Arrival and reversal
Ray and Moth arrived by ferry from Poole and photographed the marker post. For a different version of their journey—one in which they had survived a winter of wild camping—the point might have served as their finish line. Instead, they were starting at the route’s end and heading back west toward Polruan, where their progress had stopped almost a year earlier. The endpoint therefore reversed the ordinary direction of their walk: it was not the conclusion of the undertaking but the place from which they resumed it.
The journey beyond the marker
The return to the path followed a stretch of homelessness and uncertainty. In Taunton, after staying nearly two weeks on Jan’s floor while Moth recovered from back pain and stiffness, Ray and Moth had stood with their rucksacks and no home to return to. They took the South West Coast Path as a reason to keep moving and a way to give their future a shape. Later, after more than 250 miles of pain, exhaustion, hunger, wild nights and bad weather, they considered leaving the trail for Wales, but chose to continue. At South Haven Point, the completed distance behind them and the unfinished miles ahead were brought together in a single place.
Narrative significance
South Haven Point’s meaning changes with the direction of travel. As the route’s marked end, it carries the promise of completion; for Ray and Moth, it became a threshold back into a journey that had already been interrupted. Their return west toward Polruan also brought the path’s security into sharper relief: walking gave their days a known rhythm, while the prospect of stopping and entering an uncertain future frightened them. The point thus functions less as a final destination than as a hinge between one stage of the walk and the next.
